I am now 19 weeks and today was supposed to be the big reveal-

The baby had other plans.

She was fast asleep, curled up in a very tight ball, and not willing to move. The ultrasound tech had to move around and around just to try and see everything she needed to, let alone gender. They even took a break in the middle and had me move and adjust positions to see if baby would move.

The above picture is the supposed evidence that proves gender, but I don't really see it.

Right now, we are planning on a little girl! Girls are few and far between on either side of our families, but we are excited!

LJ and I are excited to announce the newest addition to our family! We told our families on Thanksgiving that I am pregnant with our first baby. My official due date is June 14th. We are nervous and excited but will keep you updated!

NEA Director

I was recently elected as NEA Director from the state of Idaho. This means I represent the 12,000 IEA Members on the National Education Association Board of Directors. I am excited and humbled by this opportunity. We had the first Board Meeting and Training last week in Washington D.C. It was a busy week. I learned a little bit more about my responsibilities, made tons of friends, and learned a lot. I am excited to do the advocacy work for students and teachers at the National Level. We have 4 Board Meetings a year along with the annual meeting in the summer, so I will be traveling a lot more. I look forward to sharing my adventures and learning with all of you!

Disneyland & California Adventure

We spent two days in California Adventure and Disneyland before the race. I just have to say that Disneyland is still the happiest place on earth. I love it there. I love everything about being in the theme park. I love the rides, the characters, the atmosphere, the music. It makes me feel like a kid all over again.

I didn't take as many pictures in Disneyland because we were so busy running form ride to ride which made me very sad. I guess I will just have to go back!

Disneyland Half Marathon 2011

LJ and I spent Labor Day Weekend in California with his brother Jake and his wife Kim. We went down to run the Disneyland Half Marathon. The race started at 6:00am in Downtown Disney, wound through California Adventure, Disneyland, and then to the streets of Anaheim. We also got to run through Angels Stadium. That was my favorite part of the run. I didn't run my fastest time but it was still fun and a great event for all Disneyland Lovers.

We made our annual trek to Montana this year for about ten days. The cabin is still as wonderful today as it was when we were kids. We ate too much, stayed up late, played Scrabble and Phase Ten, watched movies, sat in the sun, played in the water, hiked, went on four-wheeler rides, and made smores by the fire. It was awesome. LJ brought his wooden driftboat he built and was able to take it on 4 trips down the Missouri fishing. He loved it. It is a great accomplishment for him. He and Kody spent a day in town working on our truck- thank you Grandpa, Greg, and Myron for all of the help! Lynn, Greg, Grandma, Grandpa, Josh, Jason, Alexis were all able to come and spend time with us and we appreciated it. It is so fun to spend time with everyone!!! We missed Kris and Mat, but they are off on their own adventures and that is great! Until next year Montana-

Mermaids in the Basement

While in Chicago, I read my first book on my new IPAD using my Kindle App. I kinda liked it. Mermaids in the Basement by Michael Lee West was a quick read. It is the story of a young woman who just lost her mom and step father who travels home to Alabama where she learns the secrets of her mother's past. The women in the story are funny, entertaining, and unique. Each character brings fun and flavor to the book and keeps the reader wanting more. I highly recommend for a fast, easy, and entertainging read.

Field Museum & Shedd Aquarium

The Field Museum & Shedd Aquarium sit on Lake Michigan in Chicago and they are AWESOME!! The Field Museum is huge! It houses thousands of species from all over the world as well as displays on the Egyptians, whales, horses, and DINOSAURS!! They have the world's most complete T-Rex skeleton, called Sue, along with other species from those periods. It is fascinating to see bones millions of years old. I was like a kid in a candy store.

The Aquarium was no less spectacular. They had dolphins, Beluga Whales, sea lions, sea otters, a shark reef with six different species, jelly fish, and hundreds of other fish species. I loved it!

Willis (Sears) Tower

We also ventured to the Sears Tower- one of the tallest buildings in the world. It is 108 stories tall, standing 1451 feet in the air. On the SkyDeck there are 5 glass platforms that jet out from the building allowing visitors to be suspended in midair over the city below. This was one of the scariest and coolest things I have ever done. With beautiful 360 degree views of the city, this is definitely a must do!

Chicago & Wrigley Field

This past week I spent in Chicago for the NEA Representative Assembly. We got to have a little bit of fun besides going to meetings 12 hours a day. The first night was spent at Wrigley Field- one of my new favorite ball parks. This park is beautiful. It is original- placed right in the middle of the city, surrounded by neighborhoods, stores, restaurants, the Metro, buildings. I love that people reinforced their buildings and put bleachers on their roofs. The Ivy on the outfield wall is beautiful. This is a great, very personal place to watch a baseball game. Loved it!

Mormon Fiction

My sister-in-law recommended these new books to read and I decided to check them out. They were written by H.B. Moore. They are: Abinadi, Alma, and Alma the Younger. The three books trace the stories of these men throughout the Book of Mormon. Even though they are loosely based on the lives of these men, they also include many elements of fiction. It is interesting to think about these men and what their wives, children, and other aspects of their lives would have been like. Often we read the scriptures and think of the prophets as men who just preach the gospel and lacked other aspects of their lives. These books bring them to life in a fun, but still historically correct way. I think Abinadi was my favorite and Alma the Younger my least favorite. Alma the Younger seemed to drag the rebellion out too long. I would have liked to have seen more of his after life, while preaching, marrying, and making up for his sins later in life. It was still fun to read and I enjoyed it. I highly recommend these stories and look forward to reading her other books she has written.

Butterscotch Bars

I made my Mom's Butterscotch Bars last week. They didn't turn out quite the same.

Don't get me wrong- they were good. They were not light and fluffy and heavenly like Mom makes them.

I was disappointed.

In talking with my mom, I didn't melt the brown sugar and butter together first on the stove. The recipe didn't say to do that.

This is the struggle with cooking- all of these little tips that come with time and experience.

Someday I will master the butterscotch bar. In the meantime, I will just have to keep trying.

Favorire Historical Book would be Team of Rivals. It is the story of Abraham Lincoln and his cabinet and his ability to balance all of their strengths, political aspirations, and lead the country. Favorite Fiction=Red Glass. Story of a girl overcoming her fears and helping her friends discover the truth of the past.

Summer is here and I am looking forward to more great reads!

Book Review March 14-20

Well, I finally finished my gigantic book: What Hath God Wrought by Daniel Walker Howe. This tells the story of America in the early 1800s. It is 800 pages packed with detail. Howe writes like he is telling a fireside story. This book avoids making an argument in any direction, but simply explains the transformation of America. It is interesting and full of facts. There were a few parts where Howe seemed to get side tracked and some parts of chapters didn't seem to fit together. Overall, I enjoyed it. WARNING: Not for the faint of heart. It is meaty!

I also read Ree Drummond's Black Heels to Tractor Wheels last week. Ree writes a blog called The Pioneer Woman. Her book tells the story of how she met her husband and their courtship. Her style is blunt and frank. She tells it like it is in an open manner that people can relate to. She is real and easy to relate to. I love reading her blog and I loved reading her story even more.

To highlight the week, we traveled to Montana to meet The Pioneer Woman. My sister Kori blogged about it here. Check out the pictures and captions. It was a great weekend. My mom, dad, Kori, Cache, and cousin Mat all made the trek. It was fun to hang out with my Grandparents, Aunt Lynn, Uncle Greg, Counsin Josh, and see Great Falls. I love that town. It was a great weekend with family, fun, and memories.

Book Review February 28-March 4

Well, this last week has been chaotic! I did not read a full book and I did not post about my book from the week before!

EPIC FAILURE!

I did however, organize a the rally at the Capitol steps, conduct three interviews, speak at the rally, teach school, clean my house, and workout 4 times. So I guess the week wasn't a total failure.

Last week I read, A Curse Dark as Gold by Elizabeth C. Bunce.

I did not like it at all. I thought it was slow developing, the main characters lacked personality and relatability, and the story just seemed predictable. I am in the minority in my critique. The students at school love the book. It was posted as a nominee for many awards. It is spin on the story of Rumplelstilskin set in America in the 1800's. Again, I didn't like it, but you might. Check it out.

Book Review February 20-26th

This week, the "Freshman Feed and Read" at school is The Last Exit to Normal by Michael Harmon. This book is engaging, quick, fun, and sad. It tells the story of a young man who finds out his dad and gay and has to move to a small Montana town to start a new life with his dad and his dad's partner. It describes small, rural lifestyle and the value of learning hard work. It also emphasizes embracing new cultures and accepting different lifestyles. The main character is easy to relate to. My students seem to relate with his struggles and his conflict. It was a great read and I would give it four out of five stars.

Book Review February 13-19

This week LJ convinced me to read Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell. It is the story of an elite group of Navy Seals sent on a mission into Afghanistan. They were ambushed by the Taliban and 3 of the 4 men died. The book details Marcus' survival and the help he received from a local tribe along the way. The story is tragic and sad. It details why wars are unfair in the adherence to rules of engagement and why servicemen are often fighting more then just the enemy- they are fighting the American media and perception. Often times it felt like the book was a soap box for Marcus' personal vendettas. Ignoring those parts, it is the story of American spirit and the will to live and how people are placed in our lives to help us survive. It will make you cry and it will make you think. I recommend this book- I think there is a movie coming out as well. Too bad it will probably be rated "R".

Freedom of Speech?

I found a blog that linked me to this article.

A teacher in Pennsylvania blogged about her students in horrendous way. When I first saw the headline, it freaked me out a little bit and I quickly searched my brain for anything I have written that could be considered mean. After reading her comments though, there is no way my blogging has even come close to what she said.

It reminds me that yes, there is freedom of speech in the United States. However, when you are in a position of responsibility or in charge of impressing young minds, it serves one well to evaluate their conduct and ask themselves if they would say those things in front of their constituents. As teachers, people critique our every move and we have to be aware of the image we are portraying at all times.

Yes, me students drive me crazy on occasion. Yes, there are days I go home and wonder if I really am the worst teacher in the world. Yes, I have bad days at work. In the end, I really do love my students and wouldn't do anything else.

How did I manage to read?

Seven Miracles that Saved America by Chris Stewart and Ted Stewart
My mom bought this for me for Christmas. I learned some interesting facts about history from this book- I need to refresh myself on Chinese History and I will forever be learning more and more about wars in American History. I enjoyed the mix of narrative story and commentary in the book. I did not like the lack of assertion. I felt like the authors simply stated a bunch of what-ifs, without making assertions themselves. They argue that without these events America would not have ended up where it is today, but they fail to put forth alternative endings had events changed in any way. It reminds us all of the miracle that our country is and how blessed we are to live in our country. How time and time again, we overcome obstacles and live on. I enjoyed the book, but it isn't one of my all time favorites. I would say 3 stars out of 5.

To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Every year my students read this book in English class in third quarter and every year I reread it with them. I love this book. Note: I hated this book when I read it in 9th grade. I can't get enough of it now. What a timeless story of the race issues America experienced throughout the 1900s. It tells the story of growing up in a small southern town, childhood games, difficult neighbors, mysterious neighbors, and wild adventures. I love the metaphor of the Mockingbird and the mysterious friendship with Boo Radley. This book is timeless and everyone needs to experience life as Scout and Jem lived it. 5 stars out of five.

Double Trouble

My dogs have lived in the same kennel for 6 years.

They have had the same fence for those 6 years.

In those six years, they have never destroyed the fence until this summer.

This summer while LJ was out of town, they broke the fence posts, so they had a straight shot into the backyard. I figured they were bored and rededicated myself to playing with them, walking them, and generally spoiling them.

Then two weeks ago, they broke it again. Once again, we fixed it again.

Then tonight, they ate the fence again.

I don't know what their problem is. Maybe they aren't getting enough to eat? Maybe they need attention? I wish they could just talk and tell me what their needs are.

LJ doesn't have the patience to keep fixing the fence. If they break it again, they might not make it to their next birthday...

Please dogs, stop breaking the fence-

I am addicted to reading.

This week I read, The Help by Kathryn Stockett.

Amazing!

This is the story of three women who lives cross paths in Jackson, Mississippi in the 1960s. Two black women and one white women live their lives, but slowly their lives begin to intertwine. Two women are maids and one is a college graduate, questioning the world she lives in. The story is fast paced and pulls you in. These women become friends as the reader becomes part of their daily routine. Occassionally keeping track of their different lives gets a little hard, but it is worth it. These women are strong and inspirational. The reader will fight along with them and become captivated in their lives. This is a must read!

Wild Clay

I had another successful week of New Years Resolutions.

I finished my book about Henry Clay. It is called: Henry Clay: The Essential American by David S. Heidler and Jeanne T. Heidler. Henry Clay was an American who lived through much of the most pivotal time in America. He led the War Hawks who pushed for the War of 1812. He crafted compromise legislation during slavery fights and he ran for president four times. This book traces his life through all of it and it was phenomenal. So many of the issues in American History can be understood by reading his life and I loved this book. I can't wait to read more about his life.

Book #2:

Call of the Wild by Jack Landon

This book is the big read sponsored by the Boise Public Library this year. This book is a classic and I admit, I had never read it. It is the story of a dog stolen from his home in California and sold into Alaska to be used as a sled dog during the Gold Rush up there. He goes from a comfortable, home dog, into a cold blooded killer at times struggling to survive and eventually ends up living with a pack of wolves. It is a short and quick read. I enjoyed it. I highly recommend reading the classics to everyone. They have much to offer.

Going Old School

This week I am combing through a great books about Henry Clay.

It is 450 pages.

I am taking notes as I read, thinking about how to implement it in my classroom, so I am not done.

On Wednesday, I started to panic that I wouldn't be able to get a book read this week. So I decided to read a book from my childhood past.

I reread the first four books from The Boxcar Children series. I loved these books as a kid. I still love them. I read them super fast now, but they are super cute and fun. I love the stories of the four Alden Children.

Yes, they are cheesy, but if you want a blast from the past and a cute, easy read- check out the series.

They are awesome!

Books January 2nd-8th

Well, I wanted to read a book a week during 2011. I read three this week.

Ford County by John Grisham
Huge disappointment for me. I love John Grisham's novels- love them. I am obsessed with his stuff. Did not like this at all. Ford County is a series of short stories about life in Mississippi. I liked one of the eight short stories. I know a lot of people have liked the witty and often odd stories, but I was not a fan.

I am Nujood: 10 and Divorced by Nujood Ali with Delphine Minoui.
Story of a young girl in Yemen who is married by her dad at age 10 and abused and molested by her husband. She is brave enough to ask for a divorce from the court when women are not supposed to speak out. This story is riveting and compelling. Her story pulls you in and you respect this young girl and everything she has gone through.

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
This book too was a huge disappointment. I read her historical fiction books about Valley Forge and loved them, so I was really looking forward to this, but it fell flat. I never related to the character or felt any connnection. It is the story of a young teenage girl who experiences an event which leaves her not speaking during her freshmen year of high school. She fails to connect with adults and her grades suffer. I know students love it, but it does not make my top ten.

How 'bout them apples?

Last weekend, LJ and I made our first attempt at dehydrating apples. My brother Kody had to sell fruit for his baseball team, so we ended up with 20 pounds of apples. We decided to dehydrate some. We borrowed by Grandma Bonnie's dehydrator and apple coreing machine.

The peeling and coreing machine is one of the coolest little gadgets I have ever used. I want one.

The whole process was fast to prep, slow on the dehydrating. We didn't use quite enough lemon juice, so the apples turned a little brown, but they are good and in the freezer. We still have more to do and that is the project for this weekend.

Success in another domestic area- only a million more to go!

New Year's Resolutions

It happens each January. People resolve to change their life, do this and that. I make resolutions each year, and I do manage to accomplish them once in awhile. This year, I am writing my resolutions down, sticking them to my bathroom medicine cabinet, and checking in on myself each week. I won't give you all of my resolutions here, but I will note five of them.

1) Maintain my current weight loss by working out 5 days a week and running a second half marathon.

2) Start writing in my journal again at least twice a week

3) Read a book each week

4) Attend the temple once a month

5) Go on a date with my husband once a month

Canned Food Drama

The annual canned food drive at school ended yesterday.

I told my third period class I wouldn't give them homework over the break if we won-

We didn't win.

I am not giving them homework.

I do think it is absolutely hillarious that the teacher who won got so competitive, that she went to the store yesterday at lunch, after she heard she was losing to us, and bought enough cans to beat my class. As we speak, my students are declaring the injustices of how the crown was stolen from them by a last second trip to the store. Oh, the joys of junior high.

It probably would have been cheaper to just buy your class pizza, then to buy all the cans. My students contributed 279 cans to the cause. The winning class 311.

Oh well- it all goes to the Food Bank and helps feed hungry families during the Holiday Season.

Can't we all just be happy and feel good that we helped the needy this time of year?

Survival Mode

Teachers are just as guilty as the students when it comes to counting down to Christmas Break. We hope the week before will go by super fast, so we can get to the much anticipated break. Sometimes, it just seems to last forever. How do you survive the week before Christmas Break?

10. Assign your students lots of book work, so they have to sit and work quietly and they don't bug you. (Please note, I am not doing that this week!)

9. Give your students a quiz/test so you can sit and do nothing while they take it. (Please note, I am doing this tomorrow- one down side, I then have to grade the quiz.)

8. Sign up to bring treats to the daily grazing table in the copy room

7. Make a deliberate effort to avoid the copy room at all costs- the temptation is just too great!

6. Partake in the Secret Santa gift exchange (sad face here because our school did not do one this year)

5. Get super competitive about the canned food drive at school and bribe, blackmail, and motivate your students at all costs in order to achieve the super classroom status as winner of the canned food drive

4. Continue counting the minutes until Christmas Break has arrived

3. Make long to do lists and continue to avoid and neglect them every night

2. Assign difficult homework to tortue your students

1. Just give up and resign yourself to the fact that despite your most amazing efforts, your students are not remembering anything you teach that week.

Week in Reflection

Last week was a pretty significant week. First, it snowed 8 inches in Boise on Tuesday night, resulting in a snow day for the Boise School District!!! Only my 2nd snow day in seven years teaching. Awesome!! The snow did cause our tree in our backyard to snap as well. That is going to be messy to clean up!

Then, LJ and I did lots of car shopping. My Infiniti was coming to the end. It has been a good car, with 216,000 miles on it. It was just time for us to move on. So Friday night we bought a 2008 Ford Edge. I like it- it was a little more then I wanted to spend a little less then that, but it is a good car and I like it. It should last a long time.

The Christmas decorations are up and the snow continues to fall. Good times in Boise, Idaho!

My Take For Life Diet continues on. I down about 20 pounds now and I was finally brave enough to try on a size 10 pair of pants- and guess what?...

I am wearing pants today I have not been able to wear in over a year. :)

Week in Review

3 weeks down on the new diet. I am starting to get the hang of it. I have lost 10 pounds in 3 weeks and am feeling good. I am also noticing what foods I really crave a little too much. It is easy to turn down candy bars, but cheese is my weakness. We had a soup party at school this week, but I resisted. We went to the pumpkin patch as a family to celebrate Kori's birthday and resisting popcorn and those cute little donuts was a little hard. I do miss being able to dig into a chip now and then. It is worth it though- the pounds are coming off and I am feeling good. My workouts are picking up and I am looking forward to even better results.

School is plowing along. Each day I am amazed at the things kids say and do.

On a completely separate note: We attended my nephew's flag football game yesterday- he is six. The parents were horrendous. They were walking the sidelines, pacing, following every move of the ball, coaching their kids. Two dads moving the chains were yelling at another dad, who was mad their son was offsides. Then they walked by and said, "Oh, I didn't see that, was that an 80 yard touchdown run." So then another parent talked trash back. Who talks trash at their six year old son's flag football game? There are some intense parents in the world. Let the kids enjoy it and have fun. Sheesh!

Bumper Cars

Driving home tonight, I was merging on the freeway. The car in front of me accelerated- I wasn't that close; I glanced back to check traffic and when I looked again, the car had come to a complete stop. I slammed on my brakes, but I just didn't stop in time. I flew forward and heard a loud bang. I was convinced the front of my car was gone. I pulled my car over, got out, to a shaking young man in the car in front of me. His car was fine, my car was fine. He wasn't injured and neither was I. Two nice state patrolmen descended upon the scene. Since the damage did not exceed $1500, no citation was issued and we all left.

I am embarrassed and shaken up. I have never hit anyone before and it is not a fun feeling. I think I will leave the Bumper Cars for the theme parks next time.

Montana- Old School

For Labor Day this year we went to Montana. I didn't take many pictures, but my sister Kori did. You can check out some here. She mentioned the tradition of taking pictures in the swing, so I went back and found some of the pictures I have scanned in over the years of calendar and movie making and I thought I would share some. These pics are quite embarassing and illustrate my looking like a boy phase, but here they are anyway.

Week 1

I have not been able to lose weight for the last 9 months. I trained for and ran a half marathon and didn't shed a pound- in fact I gained weight. After watching my parents shed their pounds this summer, I decided it was time to give their new thing a try.

Today was the end of the first week. It wasn't always easy. Take Shape for Life has you eat 5 of their meals and 1 of your own. You cut out many of your favorite foods. :( It has been an adjustment thinking about what to make for dinner every night that fits into the guidelines given, but without simply eating chicken and salad every night. I don't want to get bored. So I am learning what I like and don't like and learning to be brave and try new things. LJ as well has embraced the diet.

At the end of week one, I have lots five pounds. I know that will slow down in the weeks to come, but I am dedicated to it for at least a month. If I absolutely hate it at the end of that time, I will quit, but I think I can do it and lose the weight I want to.

Keep your fingers crossed for me!

ESPN GameDay

Saturday morning my friend Steph and I got up early to brave the crowds and watch ESPN's GameDay filmed at Boise State. This is the premier College Football television show and to have it in Boise was awesome!! I love College Football, so I just couldn't pass up the chance. We ended up down on the sidelines and upclose. It was neat to see how they filmed the show, framed shots, moved cameras and people, and to be there for the event. I got to shake Chris Fowler's hand and we even ended up on television. Being the nerd I am, I taped the show and watched it when I got home and looked for myself. Now I can say I have been on national televison! :) Thanks Steph for the great morning! It is a memory to remember. :)

Montana 2010

We went to Montana for Labor Day this year. We love Montana. Grandma and Grandpa's Cabin has been the place of memories and magic for over 2 decades. The kids love playing in the dirt, water, throwing rocks, baseball, running, seeing bears, four-wheelers, and we even did a nature hike this year. We played Scrabble, read Hunger Games, the boys watched lots of Supernatural, LJ fished on the mighty Missouri, and we ate lots. The cabin was even better this year because the addition is done- thank you Grandma, Grandpa, Uncle Greg, Cheryl, Lynn, etc for helping finish the bedrooms and bathroom so we can all spread out and fit. I wish we could have seen more of everyone, but I know how busy life is. I didn't take many pictures, but here are some. Katie, Clint, Max, and Ryan- we missed you!! Until next year cabin- :)

Everything I Need to Know I Learned in Junior High

The first month a school is flying by and I have learned a lot already. I love my students and am trying all kinds of new lessons with them. We are having fun and becoming masters of United States History. I have learned a few funny things along the way; I thought it would be fun to share.

10. Doing your school work entitles you to a car

Chris Crutcher

Chris Crutcher is a young adult author who grew up in Cascade, Idaho. He is edgy, succint, and tells it like it is. He came and spoke to our students last Friday in an all school assembly.

Did I mention he is captivating?

He kept 600 12-15 year olds entertained for an hour. They laughed and listened and learned. He explained some of his life stories that shaped characters in his books. He also explained how he mixes people and events to create works of fiction.

I hadn't read much of his work before- now I am hooked. In the last few weeks, I have devoured, Running Loose, Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, Whale Talk and am currently working on Deadline. Some of his stuff is a little on the edge; he isn't afraid to use a swear word when nothing else will do. But it is real. And my students eat it up.

I recommend his books. He provides real life stories that people can relate to. I was crying as I finished Whale Talk . His stuff makes you think and thinking is never a bad thing. Check out the local Idaho author and get some good reading in while you're at it.

Cloudy with a Chance of a Cold

I felt it. It hit yesterday morning right after first period. The first sign of a sore throat. That faint scratch you feel seeping up into the back of your throat. By 8th period, my voice was sore from talking all day and I needed more water to keep me going. Last night I took it easy, ate dinner, doused myself with airbourne and orange juice and went to bed.

It didn't work.

This morning the tightness in the throat and the cloudiness of the head are ever present. I can feel the congestion gathering in my nose and sinuses. And of course, it is back to school night tonight!

So to the five people who read my blog, what are your favorite cold remedies? Or cold preventions? How do you know when you have a cold coming on?

Just say no to the snot. It makes like miserable for all. Now I head to school to spray my room with Lysol and wipe down every desk, stapler, paper, pen, and door handle with a Clorox wipe. I will win the war on germs.

Can't Buy Me Love

I'm back and ready to blog! And I mean it this time. :)

Remember that show? Late 80s early 90s set in Tucson, Arizona. I lived in Tucson when it came out, so I thought I was super cool. The popular cheerleader gets paid to date the nerdy kid for one month so he could be popular. I don't think any money was exchanged this time, but here's my little story:

School has been in for about three weeks now. We had out first dance of the year on Friday night. I was chaperoning ( meaning I walk around and embarass kids who are dirty dancing or stop the 9th grade boys from starting mosh pits with their jumping), and I notice one of the cheerleaders. She is cute and not overly talkative, but not shy, and she is talking to one of my sweet, nerdy, glasses, slightly overweight, special ed kids. They hung out all night long. They danced, sat on the wall and talked, walked around. I couldn't believe it. I found the cheer advisor and told her how cool I thought it was and how proud I was of this student. After the dance I found her with her friends and mentioned it to her, and her reply to me was "Yeah, anonymous student is cool. He is way fun." It reminded me that there are nice kids in the world who don't conform to social norms and who hang out with people just because they are fun and not because of what they where or what sport they play. Be proud of our kids and remember some of them are doing great things and inspire us once in awhile!

I feel like I blinked and July was over. This is very depressing. Now August is here and school is only three weeks away. During July I watched a lot of baseball, LJ was gone for a week, I traveled to Boulder for a week and we spent the last weekend of the month in northern Idaho with friends. Boulder was a huge event for me. I attended a Gilder Lehrman Summer Seminar for teachers. It was an all expenses paid trip to go study with the best historians on the Great Plains and their impact on American History. I stayed in the dorms at UC Boulder and studied with 25 new friends from around the country. This was the best professional development I have ever done in my life. We studied with Elliot West, professor from Arkansas. I left the week, enriched, inspired, and full of new teaching ideas and strategies. We also learned and studied with Patricia Limerick of UC Boulder. I am grateful for this fabulous experience I had and the chance to learn from the best. The highlight of the week was a trip to Bent's Fort in Colorado. The Plains truly are a great place which have deeply impacted the history of our country. Lots of pictures to follow.

The last weekend of the month was spent at Silverwood Theme Park with our friends Jenn and Jason. It was so fun. I love roller coasters and rides. The water park was cold, but fun as well. I didn't take any pictures which is super sad! Thanks for a great weekend!

Today I watched my sister Kori's three children while she got her hair done. Let me just saw, "WOW!! How do you do it every day Kori?" I was exhausted after two hours and she does this 24/7. I had 4 year old Jack, 3 year old Kenzie, and 4 week old Cache. Little Cache needed lots of burping and then decided that he didn't want to sleep anywhere except my arm. Kenzie didn't nap long enough and caused lots of mischief. Jack just wanted to be pushed on the swingset so badly, but ended up eating, watching Star Wars, driving the car, and playing Wii. Cache ate and burped and slept and cried and wanted attention. It was tons of fun and I love hanging out with them (cause I don't get to see them often), but three is....well, it is three children under the age of four. So let me just say to all you mom's out there, "YOU ROCK!" I am mad impressed with those mothering skills. Kori is a new mom and she is making it happen with grace and style, while her wimpy older sister is tired after two hours. Thanks Kori for letting me chill with your kids today and trusting me with them and keep doing your thing, cause you make mothering look easy!

I like to compare myself to Monica (from Friends). I am a total control freak, love being organized, and one of my favorite possessions is my label maker. I have always wanted a shredder. What else does a girl need to complete their office get-up then a shredder? I could never quite stomach spending the money on one, but today, enough was enough. My filing cabinet is spilling over and the office needed serious help. Enter, the Fellowes P-58Cs, courtesy of Office Max and their shredder sale. Now, I have a shredder to shred to my hearts content. Good-bye old paper and hello identity protection. This happy little clam has slowly been pecking away at her pile of papers and throwing those tiny shreds in the recycling bin. It's a marvelous day!

Well, gosh, darn it. It has been over three years since my last speeding ticket; I must have forgot to knock on wood this morning. LJ forgot his phone, so I took it to him at work and then I was rushing to get to class on time. The same cop has been in the same place on Cole Road just past Costco every day for the last two weeks, but could I remember that, Nooo! I just had to go a little too fast and drive right by him when there was no one else around, so of course his radar got me dead on and of course he just had to pull me over. Of course he gave me a ticket. I did not argue, I did not cry, I did not make up some elaborate story about why I didn't deserve a ticket. I sat there in my car and accepted my punishment like a big girl. I know I drive fast and I know I need to slow down and now I have an $85 punishment to remind me of those two facts. Thank you Boise Police for helping me learn a valuable lesson today.

My new favorite cleaning product

I just got done cleaning the bathroom and I thought I would share my new favorite cleaning tool. My mom introduced me to the Magic Eraser probably 5 or 6 years ago when they were moving. I knew it was great for getting marks off walls and baseboards, but I am slowly learned to appreciate just how versatile this eraser is. It works great for cleaning tile floors. I recently decided to use it on my bathtub. It has gotten my tub so clean. I started about a month ago, just scrubbing the tub. And I scrub with the eraser every week and now most of the scum and black line that you can't get rid of are nearly gone. My tub looks whiter and brighter then it has in years. Your tub won't look amazing overnight, but after a few weeks, it will look great. Give it a try and let me know how your results turn out. You just might find you like it.

LJ's youngest brother, Kurt, got married this last weekend. Jenica and Kurt were married in the Boise Temple and then had their reception out in Nampa. It was a long and busy day. The last of the five boys is finally married. Kurt and Jenica are off to Parump, Nevada to begin their new adventure. We wish them the best of luck and hope they come visit often. Rick and Kellie did a fabulous job on the food and a good time was had by all. Congratulations Kurt and Jenica!!

Another school year has come and gone. I can't believe I have taught for six years. The time goes by faster and faster. I used to wonder why my mom could never remember what happened and in what year. Now I understand why. It just all seems to blur together in a haze of fog.
We went to Carrie Underwood last week. Awesome! One of the best concerts I have ever been to. I have loved her since week one of her debut on American Idol and she did not disappoint. Her opening acts weren't too shabby either.

I finished school Friday and started class Monday. I am in a Teaching American History Grant (hereafter referred to as TAH) and I love it. I get to learn more about History, collaborate with colleagues, and fill my mind instead of emptying to unappreciative ninth graders. Well, with class comes lots and lots of reading. So in the last week I have read, Liberalism and Socialism by John Dewey, American Progressivism by Pestritto and Atto, and Electing FDR: The New Deal Campaign of 1932 by Donald Ritchie. I still have about 4 more books to go, plus over 100 pages of primary sources to read, but it's all good. I am plugging away at it. I won't take the time to write a book review of these- you might fall asleep. I will say that Pestritto & Atto's book is a great collection of Progressive Era sources. I also really liked the Ritchie book. It is a clear, concise summary of the election of 1832, who ran in each primary, and the politics of that time. I highly recommend it.

So here is too another rainy week in Boise (what like the 5th in a row?) and another great week of learning.

Kody Graduates!

My youngest brother Kody graduated from high school on Friday night! The baby of the house has made it. I wonder how my parents will react to soon having an empty nest (I think they will survive), but Kody might not. :) Kody is one of my favorite siblings and I have many phrases and sayings of his saved in my memories. I share a few of my favorite pictures of him here. I will never forget his e-mail to me in college about the cat getting run over, the picture he colored for me in second grade, and the note he put on his leftovers one night, telling everyone not to eat Kari. I love you Kody and am so proud of you!!!

Memorial Day in Elk City

We spent Memorial Day weekend in Elk City with LJ's Family this year. It was rainy and cold on Saturday, but the sun came out Sunday. It was nice to relax, sleep, eat, and watch tv. We did get to go on a four wheeler ride and enjoy the beautiful scenery. It was nice to get away. I debated bringing the dogs up, but I thought it was going to rain all weekend and I didn't want them to be miserable, so I left them home. I wish we had brought them. They would have had fun. They need to get out! Next time. Thanks to all for a great weekend.

Three Books in One

Little Bee by Chris Cleave

This book is narrated by the two main characters, Little Bee (a Nigerian refuge) and Sarah O'Rourke (a London journalist). Chapters rotate back and forth and pull the reader in from the beginning. Reviews are brief and weak for a reason- this plot should not be revealed at all. I found myself liking the book and wondering how on earth it could end. I thought the ending was a little abrupt and in hindsight maybe predictable, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless and recommend it for everyone.

Andrew Jackson by H.W. Brands

I finally finished my book about Andrew Jackson. Jackson is one of my least favorite presidents. I don't like his actions or impact on American History. While Brands is a talented and thorough author, this was not my favorite biography. Too much time is delegated to explaining the historical context of events before explaining Jackson's role in them. Over half of the book is spent on events before his presidency. It seemed like events from his presidency were glossed over and much of the controversy ignored. Jackson's perspective is explained which is good and helped me think a little more of him, but I still felt it was very pro-Jackson instead of middle of the road. It is a quality biography of Jackson, but it did not convince me to love him more and it could have been condensed had some of the historical narrative been eliminated.

I also read Liberalism and Social Action by John Dewey this weekend, but I won't bore anyone with a review of it. My summer Teaching American History cohort classes are beginning, so I am diving head first into all my readings for those classes. I won't review all of them- just the ones I really like! I did not like this one much, so not much else to say.

Great Potato

Today I ran my first ever Half Marathon! It was pretty good. I felt good and had a decent time of about 2 hours and 20 minutes. Not awesome, but I came in under 2.5 hours which is what I wanted. I felt good and stayed consistent and had fun. I feel okay right now, but that could change tomorrow. I didn't get any pictures with my friend Kathie who I trained with the last four months. LJ's brother, Jake, and his wife, Kim also ran it. They rocked it and finished a little ahead of me. Congrats to all! I am pretty proud of my accomplishment.

The Gospel According to Larry

The Gospel According to Larry by Janet Tashjian is my latest literary find. It is the Freshman Feed and Read Book for 4th Quarter at school. It details the life of the teenager, Josh Swenson. Josh is a self-proclaimed nerd, who would rather not be noticed and functions at a level much higher then the average jock. He finds fascination in beginning an online anonymous blog posting his views on anti-consumerism in America. What he doesn't realize is just how popular his blog will become. The story is fast paced and an easy read. It draws the reader in and keeps one turning the page. Teenagers can relate to the book as it is about many of the struggles they face daily (Josh secretly has a crush on his best friend). Adults will also appreciate his comments on America and the consumerism that exists will also appreciating the insights into the life of the teenager as well as the online phenomenon.

The work is fiction, but the author makes it seem like it could be real. I had to double check myself- the end left me believing that this was a true story and I wanted more. Lucky for me there is a second and third book in the series. I am going to check them out.

Mom's Weekend

This weekend is my mom's weekend! Saturday was her birthday. Of course, she had to celebrate watching a baseball game (it is just that time of year). Then we had dinner at their house and gave gifts. It was a good time. Today is Mother's Day. Mom gets the short end of the stick getting presents on the same weekend, but that's just the way it is. We got to talk to Kris today and that was awesome. Then we had a short bbque with Grandma Myers and just hung out. It was a fun filled family weekend. I want to send a shout out to my mom- she is great! I would not be half the person I am today without her. She taught me about cleaning, respect, honesty, integrity, and love. I am grateful for her strong example! Thanks Mom! Hope you had a great weekend! Katie, Clint, Max, and Kris- we missed you!!!

Concert Time

Friday night we went to Daughtry, Lifehouse, and Cavo with our good friends, Joe and Terri McCarrey. We had dinner at Texas Roadhouse ahead of time and then went to party. We had decent seats except for the giant banana speaker hanging down blocking the stage. Lame and poor planning by that stage designer!! It was still tons of fun! I love Lifehouse and Daughtry and enjoyed hearing them play live! Thanks for the good times!

The Book Thief

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak has been sitting on my fireplace for over two months. Some of my students highly recommended it to me, and I finally got around to reading it. I must say- it wasn't one of my favorites.

This novel is set during World War Two in the town of Molching, near Munich, Germany. Death narrates the story of the young girl, Liesel Memminger. She becomes the foster child of Hans and Rosa Hubermann. On the way to her new home, she watches her younger brother die and those dreams will haunt her for many years. She is closest to her father and learns to appreciate her mother. She cannot read, but slowly learns to with the patient help of her father. She steals her first book from the graveside of her brother and the story follows her book stealing passion. The novel weaves through the years of the war, watching as the Jews are cast from her town, her father's rejection of the Nazi Party, and the effects of the Nazi Party on her friends and family. She befriends a Jewish man, Max, and all of the emotions and secrecy associated with that. The plot is quick paced and pulls at your heart. It brings to life the voice of German citizens from the war and helps the reader visualize the heartache many Germans faced throughout the war.

The writing is not my favorite. Death is a random narrator. He stops mid-story to insert random facts and stories. He will define words in bold in the middle of the page for emphasis. He also will devote 2-3 page chapters to tell you what is going to happen later in the book, in order to remove some of the suspense. I did not like the voice nor the way the writing was laid out. Sometimes it was difficult to follow and see the vision for where death was going.

Though I liked the plot and know many others will too, for me, the writing overshadowed the plot and at times made it difficult to enjoy the book. I read book reviews and others rave for the narrator and the prose style; that is fine- we all have our differences.

I recommend this book to read- some of you may feel differently then I do, but it is not one of my most favorite books of all time. Good luck and let me know what you think.

The Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

I told you I planned on doing some book reviews on here so share the great books I read. I finally got the chance to read a book! The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows is a New York times Bestseller. It was a fast read and easy to follow. It is written as a series of letters between the characters. The main is Juliet a writer from London. The book takes places shortly after World War Two has ended. Europe is still dealing with the effects of the war and coming to terms with the changes in everyone's lives. Juliet gets a letter from a man after he found her name in a book on the island of Guernsey. From their the story unfolds and as Juliet writes, her life becomes entwined with the lives of her new friends on Guernsey. She longs to meet them and make them part of her life forever.

This book grabs you from the beginning and pulls you in. I found myself drinking up the references to the war and seeing how these people struggled and coped. I was unaware of the German occupation of the islands and found myself fascinated by the complex relationships that developed and strategies used to cope with all of the war difficulties. I loved the letters from different characters and seeing the story unfold from the eyes of so many participants. There is humor, tragedy, triumph, and love combined with eccentric characters who pull you into their family.

I love the book and highly recommend it to everyone!

First off- congratulations to Kurt and Jenica on their engagement!! They are getting married in June! We are super excited for LJ's youngest brother and our new sister-in-law!

LJ has been fishing in Elk City a lot! Steelhead season is here and that means fish, fish, fish!

I am working, working, working, and running a lot!

We have been spending lots of time with family and are patiently waiting for Spring to stay for good!

Update from the Slacker

Okay, I have been a major slacker the last month! I could claim "I have been so busy," but in reality, I find time to do the things that really are priorities to me, so I will just say, I have been lazy, and I promise to do better. Here are some highlights from the last month:
1) LJ and I celebrated our 6th anniversary
2) I celebrated my 29th birthday
3) LJ passed his test and is now officially A NATIONALLY BOARD REGISTERED SLEEP TECHNOLOGIST!!! Congratulations!!!!
4) Katie and Clint came to visit this past weekend! We celebrated Katie's birthday and enjoyed movies, dinners, games, and fun together
5) LJ went steelhead fishing for boys weekend with his dad and brothers

I have been reading a lot this last month and I think I might start adding a new aspect to my blog- writing a critique of the books I read and making recommendations of my favorites. Look for upcoming posts relating to this. I love to read, so why not share my passion with others?!

If you know me, you know I have University of Idaho Vandal pride through and through. And a huge shout out to the Vandals for having a winning record this year and winning a bowl game for the first time in ten years. My years at Idaho were spend suffering through Tom Cable on the sidelines...(Oh the poor memories, block them out now!) New Years Eve & Fiesta Bowl 2010

Happy 2010 to everyone! We started the New Year with the First Annual Ulmer Bowling and Ugly Sweater Party. For pictures from the night, click here. The next day, LJ and I headed to sunny Arizona for the Fiesta Bowl. Now, many of you know I am a proud graduate from the University of Idaho (go Vandal nation!!). LJ is a proud graduate of Boise State. I also enjoy watching good football, so I watch every Boise State and every Idaho game! I will support both teams, but when it comes down to it, I am a Vandal first! So all of you who think I am selling out the Vandals, think again. We stayed in Las Vegas Friday night and Saturday morning we went to Bass Pro Shop. LJ loved it!

We stayed with LJ's cousin's in Arizona and I am so sad I didn't take any pictures of them. I wished they lived closer- they are so much fun! We had a great two days with the Branch bunch in Mesa! We went to the game with my friend Stephanie and her dad. What a great game and great company!!

Well, November and December flew by and I have been a super slacker blogger. So here are some pics and a quick summary of the last two months with separate Christmas posts to follow:

1. Thanksgiving we traveled to Tri-Cities to spend Thanksgiving with Katie and Clint at their home. For pictures from that, click here.
2. The first week in December I traveled to Nashville for 5 days with the Boise Education Association for the National Council of Urban Educators Association Fall Conference. It was a great trip. I made lots of contacts with people around the country and was able to discuss issues that other associations are the country are dealing with. It is amazing how similar we are despite our different states and situations.
3. I ran the YMCA Christmas Run with my friends Kathie and Kim. We did the 10K and had a great time!! My second ten K is done and I am ready for another!
4. I had brunch with all of my Master's friends the first Monday of Christmas Break. It was great to catch up with all these wonderful friends!

My Weekend

I spent the weekend here at home. I woke up Saturday morning to this sight on my lawn:

So then, I decided to read this book I have been meaning to get to and I started and I couldn't stop, so then I went out and read the second book in the series. I highly recommend them. It is called The Hunger Games and the second book is called Catching Fire. Good stuff!

Then I got a phone call from LJ. He shot a deer! Finally! So here is a picture of the deer in our garage. He did not take any pictures after the kill, so this is all there is. I REPEAT- DO NOT SCROLL DOWN IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE THE DEAD DEER IN MY GARAGE!!!!!

I was told I needed to post again because my last post picture was gross. It was kind of...sorry. It has been a busy month, but I have been a super slacker and haven't taken any pictures. Here are the highlights:

1. Halloween- celebrated Kade's birthday and trick or treated with the kids in Kiley's neighborhood.
2. Kody turned 18! Happy Birthday little brother!!
3. LJ has gone hunting a lot
4. Kori announced she is pregnant
5. Kris left the MTC in Peru and is now in the mission field somewhere near Arequipa
6. I have worked a ton!!
7. I went to Donnelly for the weekend with my Master's girls!!

This past week has been busy! We had a great garden at mom and dad's this year, so we had a harvest party to pick the pumpkins and burn most of the garden. We went to Linder Farms first and let the kids go on rides and feed the animals, but we got pumpkins from the garden this year! Really fun, much cheaper, and we celebrated the fruits of our labors! Good times for all! Thanks everyone for a great garden and successful growing season!

Also, two weeks ago, I finally saw a dermatologist and had the mole of the back of my arm looked at. The dermatologist took it off and this is the result of his butchering. I had seven stitches in for two weeks! Now I get to have a wicked awesome scar forever! Thankfully the mole was sae and no worries!

I have been M.I.A. for awhile. Life has been super busy. I started back to school and it has been crazy. Lesson plans, grading, Back to School Night, working out, you know the usual. Kris also left on his mission last Wednesday, so we did lots of family stuff before he left. I am super excited for him and proud of him for his decision to go, even though I will miss him a lot. Katie and Clint also came down and it was fun getting to see them. I wish I had taken pictures at the fair, but I failed to. I will had our latest family picture to this post, taken right after Kris spoke in church! I will try to keep up and not be so long in writing. Peace out!

I traveled to Grandma Myers' house today with Mom and Dad to pick corn. We picked it and shucked it. Then I came home, cooked it, cut it, bagged it, and froze it. I have never done this before, so I was nervous that it wouldn't turn out. I think I did okay. 80 ears of corn later, I have 15 bags of corn of about 1.5 cups each. I am really proud of myself. It was a lot of work and time consuming, but I think it will be worth it! Thanks Grandma for the corn and Mom and Dad for all the help! YUM, YUM, YUM!!!

We traveled to Oregon Coast this past week with our friends the Griswolds. It was a fun week despite the rainy weather and questionable camping conditions. We traveled to Astoria and saw where Lewis and Clark spent the winter and the Maritime Museum. Then we went to Seaside, Lincoln City, Depoe Bay, and Newport. It was a nice relaxing week with good friends and beautiful scenery.

Yellowstone Wolf Pictures

WOLVES!
While in Yellowstone, we spent an evening watching wolves on a hillside stalking a herd of elk. Some very nice people we met from Utah had a nice spotting scope with their camera attached. Though they did not get any pictures of the wolf attacking and eating the elk calf, they got some of the initial hunt. Check these out. I have been a huge Kenny Chesney fan since his first album came out when I was a teenager. We saw him in concert 6 years ago, but from higher seats. When I heard he was coming again, I knew I wanted to be front and center. Standing in line for 5 hours to get seats front and center was well worth it! Kori, Kiley and I had front row seats and it was amazing!!! Kenny is great in concert and his opening acts, Lady Antebellum and Miranda Lambert were great as well. We rocked out to Kenny up close and personal. We also got his autograph at the end of the show. I brought three cd covers with me and he signed all three of them- one for each of us! What a fantastic night. Before the concert we had dinner at Texas Roadhouse with two of Kiley's friends: Emily and Stacy. So fun!!! Thanks girls for an awesome girls night out!!

This past week LJ and I traveled to Yellowstone National Park for four days. We stayed in three different campgrounds throughout the week and saw the entire park. It was awesome! I love the wonders that nature has to offer. We saw tons of animals: buffalo, deer, elk, pelicans, osprey, bald eagle, coyote, moose, black bear, wolves, and even a grizzly bear!!! We saw so many things that the park rangers told us were rare things to see. One night we sat in Hayden Valley and watched two wolves stalk two different herd of elk until they finally attacked and killed a calf elk! It was the best and worst of nature. The park rangers said that event has only been seen a handful of times. I loved the park and all it has to offer. Everyone should go- we hiked trails, drove every turn out, watched geyers and mud pots, and all of the wonderful things there. It was awesome!

I have been out of the loop for awhile. The first two weeks after school got out, I took class for two weeks. It was intense, but engaging. Then we went to Montana for a week with my family. It was a great time!! I love the cabin: playing in the creek, watching the kids throw rocks, walking, seeing animals, relaxation. We went into Great Falls for the 4th and watched their parade. It was fun with lots of free goodies for the kids. It was a nice long relaxing week.

Before we left, we also celebrated Kenzie's Birthday- she is 2 years old and getting cuter every day. Happy 2nd Birthday Mckenzie!

KRIS GOT HIS MISSION CALL

Finally after 3 months, many phone calls, and a new bishop later, Kris finally got his mission call in the mail on Saturday. Kris has been called to Arequipa, Peru. He leaves September 9th! We are so excited for him and so proud of him for making the decision to go! Way to go Kris. I am saving my money now! I am coming to get you in 2 years!!!!!

Garden Update

After much worry and anticipation, the garden is growing. I am excited. It is neat to go out and see the plants and how much they grow each day. I am not excited about the weeding. I have weeded more in the last few weeks then I have in the last few years. It is worth it to see the plants growing! Their is tons of spinach and it continues to grow. The Garden

LJ really wanted to plant a garden this year. He started in March growing seeds in the house, tore out the pond, planted the sprouts, and this is what exists so far. I must confess he has done much more work than I have. I helped weed on Monday. I am dedicating myself to being more helpful and ensuring that our vegetables grow and thrive. Monday I helped Mom plant her garden and last Saturday we helped Grandma Bonnie help hers as well. I have actually liked it a little bit, even though I despise yard work. Maybe this will help me overcome my negative feelings? Grow little plants, GROW!

LJ bought the Infiniti right after he got home from his mission. It is a 1996, so it is 13 years old. It has been a great car. Driving home from Nampa last night, it reached an important milestone. Easter Weekend

This past weekend was fantastic. Friday night I babysat Kade and Jeff while Kiley and Ryan went out on the town with friends. We played Guitar Hero and played baseball with Jeff. Saturday was the final softball practice before season begins! I am really excited. Then I helped mom cook the food for Easter dinner! Yummy!!

Sunday was Easter. After church, LJ and I went to his parents house and hung out and ate. We had an easter egg hunt for the kids and then ate good food! Jayson wasn't there because he was sick! I hope you are feeling better!

Then we went to mom and dad's house. Grandma and Grandpa Ulmer, Lynn, and Josh were all in town after watching Jason play in Ogden. Grandma Myers also came over to hang out with us. We had lots of food and tons of fun. We hid over 80 eggs filled with money and candy in the backyard for the kiddos. We even managed to find all of them despite the fact that half of them were camo eggs. :)

After dinner came a rousing game of wiffle ball. Dad and Kody went all out- mowing in the base paths and warning track into the grass, spray painting the bases, pitchers mound and plate. Kody and Matt even bought a brand new bat for the occassion. Dad was all time pitcher we played for over an hour. Good times! Baseball will never die in the Ulmer Family! No pictures because we were all playing. Did anyone get a picture of that sweet field? Kris, Katie, Clint, and Max- we missed you all! I am glad you had family with you in Tri-Cities. Kris- keep hitting the home runs! Happy Easter to all!

The crazy spring continues. Friday snow swirled all afternoon, wind blew, and it was generally cold. Saturday dawned clear and bright. Softball practice was great. Then I watched Kody's double header against Vallivue. It wasn't warm, but it wasn't cold either. After being outside from 12-4:30 I came home and showered and low and behold: I have a nice little sun burn on the right side of my face with a perfect sunglass mark. :) Who knew that snow and sunburns could occur so close together? When will the madness stop? Also a shout out to Kris for hitting a Home Run this weekend! First one with a wood bat- nice work. Mom, Dad, Katie, Clint, and Max were on hand to witness the event. Perfect timing. So long for now!

Spring Break= Baseball and Bad Weather

The first weekend of Spring Break, the whole family took off for Tri-Cities, Washington. Katie, Clint, and Max live there and Kris was coming down from Tacoma to play in a baseball tournament. It was the perfect storm- literally. It was rainy and cold Saturday and Sunday with only glimpses of the sun. Kris is rehabing his shoulder right now, so he can only DH, but we got to see him hit a few times. We huddled in our blankets, braved, the elements, and cheered his team on! We all stayed at Katie and Clint's house- thanks guys for letting us crash your pad. More pictures to follow of dinner and the birthday parties. It was such a fun weekend. Spring Fever

Is Spring finally here? I am crossing my fingers!!! Last week kicked off Baseball Season 2009! I love baseball season! Columbia is off to a rough start, but Kody is pitching and hitting well. I took pictures from the first game of the season, but I haven't downloaded them yet, so watch for those!
Last Saturday, Kiley, Kori, and I ran in the YMCA Basic 5, 5 miles race. We ran the whole thing, which is awesome! I didn't think I could make it, but we did great! Thanks for running with me girls and pushing me! It felt great! Now we need to keep going, so we can do the Great Potato half marathon in May!!

This weekend we are venturing to Tri Cities to watch Kris play in a tournament and visit Katie and Clint! It is going to be awesome! Look for more pictures to come! Spring is in the air!

MY FAMOUS DAY

First, off HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR. SEUSS. Today is Read Across America Day. I started the day by doing a live interview on a local radio station, 1033 Kiss FM with Chad and Hooker in the morning to promote Read Across America Day. I was super nervous, but it was really fun. Later those two DJ's came and read to our students at South and answered questions for them. It was pretty cool. Now they want to come back on Friday and do some sound bites of our students and hang out during our good grades party. It is going to be a blast!

Now for the best part of the day- I FINALLY MET SOMEONE FAMOUS!!! We heard through my connections, that Guy Fieri from Diners, Drive-ins and Dives was going to be in Boise filming today. So after school, we sprinted downtown to see if we could see Guy. Sure enough- there he was filming right on Capital Blvd. in Boise, ID!!!!! He was filming at Bar Gernika down on the Basque Block. We went and watched them film for awhile. When they took a break, I was taking a picture and Guy invited me over to come get a picture with him! He was really nice! Super cool "Guy." We talked to him for a few minutes about my job, etc. Really down to earth! He is going to be in Boise all week- going to a hockey game, filming at West Side Drive in tomorrow. Famous people really do come to Boise!!! It was awesome!! What a great day!!!!!!!!!!

President's Day Weekend, Katie was here and we celebrated her birthday and had girls night! It was awesome to all be together. I am excited for later this month when we all go to Tri-Cities to see her and watch Kris play baseball. On Saturday, Kiley and I took Kade and Jeff to Kids Fair 2009. It is huge event at the fair grounds with tons of booths, games, food, etc. It was way crowded, but I think the kids still loved it.

Social Life

I thought I would briefly summarize my week last week. Sunday we got invited to Sweet, Idaho to eat dinner with Jenn's parents. It was a blast. Her parents have some beautiful land! We can't wait for summer to go fishing and four wheeling out there. We also learned how to play my new favorite game- Hand and Foot. It is awesome! I had last Monday off (President's Day). We went to lunch at Tucanos. It is new in town. They walk around with skewers of meat and you just tell them what you want. It is awesome! I was even brave enough to try chicken heart. It was disgusting. I would go back again. Wednesday night we had dinner with our fabulous friends, Matt and Jill. Jill made acorn squash with Stove Top in the middle. Wow! What a great idea- I can't wait to try it myself. Matt had Lasik surgery last week- hope you are healing well!! Friday night I went to the Boise State Women's Basketball Game with Jason and Jenn. I haven't been to a BSU Game in forever-I really liked it. I might even be addicted. Saturday night I had dinner with my friends, Ali, Lori, Steph, and Marcy- all teachers in the district. We had a great dinner at Johnny Carinos and then talked for hours. I love Girls Night. Of course I didn't have my camera for any of this, but I will journal my life anyway. Back to another week of school and responsibility. I can't believe how the year is flying by!

P.S. We received sad news that LJ's cousin passed away in Arkansas. We will miss her greatly. Anita, Rick and Kellie drove back for the funeral and then detoured through Arizona on the way home. What a road trip for them!

Ski, Flu, Utah Trip

This past weekend we ventured to Eden, Utah northeast of Ogden for the annual Overall Boys Ski Trip. We left Thursday night and made it to Jerome before my nephew Braddock puked everywhere. It was gross. We spent the next hour hanging out in Walmart waiting for my brother in law to get the car clean. Friday we spent the day at Temple Square and had a great time. I love walking around Temple Square. We walked through the church history museum which I haven't done since I was a kid and that was really neat. We also went and ate at this place called "Pat's" which was featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives on the food network. It was yummy! We also had to eat dinner at Crown Burger just down from Temple Square-Rick's favorite place to eat in Salt Lake. The best part of the day was hanging out with my friend Jill. Jill is dating Anita's cousin. We met at Thanksgiving and she is just so much fun! I loved getting to see her!! Saturday all of LJ's brothers went skiing, but he acquired Braddock's flu and so he stayed home in bed all day. All of the boys ended up getting sick though as well, so their day was not that fun. I got sick Sunday after we got home, so the trip was successful in infecting all of us with nasty germs. It was still a fun weekend vacation!

Superbowl Party!!

So it finally happened, LJ and I have friends from church. I was so excited, I decided to throw a Superbowl Party at our house for the first time ever!! It was really fun. We had a nacho bar, homemade ice cream, brownies, cookies, soda, and tons of fun. I loved having friends over and spending time with them. The commercials were okay; the end of the game exciting, and the company fantastic! Thanks for coming over everyone!!!

The Lurcher and the Law Breaker

Well, I know posts without pictures are boring, but I need to vent for a moment. By the way, my Superbowl Party pictures will be coming, I just didn't have time to upload them last night.

The Lurcher
Each school has what I will call "the lurcher." They walk into the copy room and promptly sigh as loud as they can. I mean how dare I be on the copy machine when they want to use it. They then ask as obnoxious as possible, "Do you have a lot?" or "Are you almost done?" Next comes the stomping to the copy machine to confirm my response because I was probably lying to them and I do have a lot and will be a long time! They might stroll around the copy room, pretending to look for supplies or maybe even walk out to check their mailbox, but they proceed to check how many copies are left a second, third, maybe even fourth time. The worst is when they stand right next to you, hovering over the copier just daring you to try and copy one more thing. The lurcher can ruin even the best day and drive even the kindest, most patient teacher, insane!!

The Lawbreaker
The next category is the direct result of the architect who designed our school so that the parking lot is on the opposite side of the school from everyone's classrooms. We are only allowed to park on one side of Edson (street closest to everyone's classrooms) and Cassia (street in front of the school.) Most people don't want to park in the parking lot and then hike around the school. I park in the parking lot most of the time. Each morning I look outside and see the cars lining the street of Edson. The fire hydrant is directly outside the door. Each morning there is a car (and most of the time the same car) parked in front of the fire hydrant. If I am not mistaken, a car cannot be parked within 100 feet of a fire hydrant. I don't know why this bothers me so much, but it really does. Just because you are too lazy to walk around the school from the parking lot, does not give you the right to break the law!!! Do not park in front of the fire hydrant. I know this has no direct impact on me at all and I should not let it bother me, but it has, but now I have vented and I am going to get over it!!
